Kayla Lookinghorse-Smith Emerges At Phoenix Fashion Week

Kayla Lookinghorse-Smith sews with intention, carrying the wisdom of generational teachings in every stitch. Her designs transcend fashion, igniting meaningful conversations about Indigenous rights and representation on a global stage.

A self-taught fashion designer and the creative force behind the K. Lookinghorse brand, Lookinghorse-Smith is Hunkpapa Lakota from South Dakota and a proud member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Recognized as one of the Top 10 Global Emerging Designers in the 2023 Emerging Designer Bootcamp, she will showcase her artistry at Phoenix Fashion Week (October 20–21, 2023).

Her latest endeavor, The Timeless Collection, reimagines archival photographs through a contemporary lens, challenging the narrative that Indigenous cultures exist solely in the past. This collection highlights the enduring vitality of Indigenous identities, bridging history and modernity in every piece.

“I want to capture that black and white image of Indigenous people that people see in the museums and perceive to be like we don’t exist,” she says. “I’m going to make this collection an immersion of black and white.”
